Symptoms & Causes of Pain in Upper Extremities

Shoulder, Elbow & Wrist Pain Treatment in Charlotte, NC

Most people are not aware that chiropractic doctors can treat conditions outside the spine.  Extremity adjusting is extensively taught in chiropractic schools and there are constantly continuing education seminars that focus on extremity conditions and treatment.

Whether it is frozen shoulder syndrome, tennis elbow or carpal tunnel syndrome our office has had multiple experience and success in treating these conditions.  The reason for our success is similar to the philosophy on treating the spine.  We look to the cause of the condition and rather than treating the symptom.

Shoulder Pain

The shoulder is a highly mobile joint and is made up of various skeletal and muscular structures. Small injuries or misalignments can lead to numerous problems and pain in the shoulder. Shoulder pain can also start because of injury from car accidents, sports injuries, or even sleeping on your side or lifting something heavy.

The most common issue we see is Frozen Shoulder syndrome. Frozen Shoulder Syndrome is most commonly caused by an old injury healing improperly with scar tissue and adhesions resulting in a loss of mobility of the shoulder.

What Can You Do?

Strengthening exercises may help relieve underlying issues with shoulder pain. Doing exercises that work on strength and stability of the shoulder will be beneficial to your overall health. For home exercises to help alleviate stress, tension, or increase flexibility, check out our instructional videos.

What Can A Chiropractor Do?

Our clinic doctors can treat Frozen Shoulder by mobilizing the shoulder joint while at the same time performing soft tissue release techniques. In addition, other therapies such as ultrasound and electric muscle stimulation can be used. From our experience, we have found that Frozen Shoulder Syndrome responds the best to manual therapy first.

If the shoulder pain is due to inflammation from a strained or sprained rotator cuff or bursa or due to overuse, we can mobilize or adjust the joint to help reduce inflammation and help the healing process.

Chiropractic doctors can also simultaneously treat this area with therapies such as massage, ultrasound, and electric muscle stimulation which help with inflammation and pain management.

Wrist/Hand Pain

The most common reason of hand or wrist pain is trauma. You hit it, bump into something, or slip and fall on your hand and it can become injured. There are 8 small bones in your wrist and 19 bones in the hand. That means there are a lot of structures and joints that can become injured and cause pain. Around all those bones are also numerous small muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves as well which can all become injured causing pain.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is another reason many people experience hand and wrist pain. Carpal tunnel syndrome can cause tingling, numbness, weakness, or pain in the fingers or hand.People who do small, repetitive motions with their hands such as typing on a keyboard or cutting hair or other normal activities can develop Carpal Tunnel problems due to inflammation in the wrist and the trapping of the median nerve. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is one of the most overlooked conditions that Chiropractic doctors can treat. We urge anyone suffering from wrist and hand pain to consult with one of our Doctors before visiting a surgeon.
