Do I Have a Pinched Nerve?

A pinched (compressed) nerve can happen anywhere in your body. It happens when too much pressure is applied to a nerve by surrounding tissues.

In some cases, that tissue might be bone or cartilage, such as in the case of a herniated spinal disk that compresses a nerve root. In other cases, muscle or tendons may cause the condition.

Either way, you’re in pain – sometimes debilitating – and seeking relief quickly. That’s where Keith Clinic Estramonte Chiropractic  can help you.

In most situations, a pinched nerve is caused by spinal alignment issues related to body tissues. A Keith Clinic chiropractor can use adjustments to release a pinched nerve, addressing the cause of your pain. This can help you recover without requiring invasive procedures or medications that could lead to side effects.

What Are the Symptoms?

The signs and symptoms of a pinched nerve include:

  • Numbness or decreased sensation in the area supplied by the nerve
  • Sharp, aching, or burning pain, which may radiate outward
  • Tingling, “pins-and-needles” sensations
  • Muscle weakness in the affected area
  • Frequent feeling that a foot or hand has “fallen asleep”

Where Do Pinched Nerves Occur?

Pinched nerves can happen throughout your body, but the most common areas where you’ll feel the effects are the:

  • Neck and shoulder (compressed cervical nerves)
  • Back and upper chest (compressed thoracic and lumbar nerves)
  • Arm and elbow (caused by pressure on the ulnar nerve; for example, pain in this nerve is felt when you hit your elbow’s “funny bone”)
  • Wrist and hand (often caused by carpal tunnel syndrome).

What Causes a Pinched Nerve?

Several conditions may cause tissue to compress a nerve or several nerves, including:

  • Injury
  • Rheumatoid or wrist arthritis
  • Stress from repetitive work
  • Hobbies or sports activities
  • Obesity

What Can I Do to Prevent It?

The following steps may help you prevent a pinched nerve:

  • Maintain good positioning. Don’t cross your legs or lie in any position for a long time.
  • Make sure your workout program includes strength and flexibility exercises.
  • Limit repetitive activities and take frequent breaks if you engage in those types of activities.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
